Iran, on the other hand, used a defensive back five consisting of Mohammadi, Hosseini, Cheshmi, Pourliganji and Moharrami. Carlos Queiroz formed a 5–4–1 formation with FC Porto’s Teremi as the lone striker. Behind their starting strikers are Safi, Karimi, Nourolahi and Jahanbaksh.

Iran’s Taremi started things off as England intercepted early, enjoyed plenty of early possession and dominated the game. England immediately went on the attack thanks to Trippier’s free-kick, which Kane fed to Maguire, who hit the side netting. Iran dropped deep as England intercepted another ball from Shaw in the box. Bellingham went unnoticed as the midfielder edged past the goalkeeper.

Trippier was in again with a corner, this time hitting it past Harry Maguire, who nodded in for Saka, giving England a 2–0 lead. England showed no sign of slowing down, as Harry Kane assisted England’s third goal, while Sterling added his name to the score sheet. Iran looked down and out before Mehdi Taremi broke through in the 65th minute.

Rashford made an immediate impact after replacing Saka, slotting past the Iran goalkeeper to score England’s fourth. Iran pressed Taremi once again, but Dier cleared it. Bellingham came forward and fed Wilson, who had space and went through the Iranian defense before unselfishly passing to Grealish, who scored England’s sixth goal. Iran got a late consolation penalty as Taremi sent Pickford the wrong way to score his second. Gareth Southgate’s men were too good for Iran on the day as England overcame the Persian Stars to secure all three points.
