FIFA World Cup 2022: France striker Karim Benzema ruled out of Qatar 2022; Didier Deschamps will not call replacement


France suffered a major blow when it was announced that their star striker Karim Benzema would miss the World Cup due to a hamstring injury in his left thigh. Les Bleus have already ruled out some of their key players for this World Cup due to injuries, thus the latest development will come as a big blow for them. Benzema, 34, is fresh from winning the Ballon d’Or last month, but injuries have curtailed his playing time recently. He was expected to carry his club form up to the international level, however, this latest development means he will miss out on the showpiece event.

The Real Madrid forward was previously training away from the French team. He had his first full training session on Saturday. However, this did not go according to plan, as Benzema had to leave early in the season due to injury. Later, it was confirmed that the French player would be ruled out of the World Cup due to injury. The striker himself announced the unfortunate development on Instagram.

“I’ve never given up in my life, but tonight I have to think about the team, as I always have, so reason tells me to give up my spot for someone who can serve our group a good Thank you for all your messages of support,” Benzema wrote on Instagram.

Earlier, manager Didier Deschamps said in a statement, ‘I am very sad for Karim who made this World Cup a big goal. Despite this new setback for the French team, I have full faith in my team. We will do everything to face the great challenge that awaits us.”

No replacement for Karim Benzema

However, Deschamps later informed that he would not name a replacement for Benzema, as he was happy with the team at his disposal. When asked by French newspaper Telefoot if he would replace Benzema in their squad, Deschamps replied “No. It is a quality group. They are united in everything they do, both on and off the pitch”. .
