France will be looking to put behind their disappointing earlier form as they bid to defend their World Cup crown against Australia in their opening match. Tuesday night’s Group D contest will be interesting for a number of reasons. Ideally, France should be the favorites if the quality and depth of their squad is taken into account. However, their form of late and injuries to key players will give Australia enough incentive to pull off a shocking blow in their opening group match.

Last year at Euro 2020, France suffered a shock last-16 exit and followed it up with a poor performance in the latest UEFA Nations League. Placed in Ligue A Group 1, the French nation narrowly avoided finishing bottom after securing just five points from six games. They managed only one win in the group stage and are entering the World Cup after losing their last game 2–0 to Denmark. Australia, on the other hand, are going into this competition with a good run on their side. They beat New Zealand twice in September, however, so pulling off an upset win against France would be extremely difficult.

The defending champions are troubled by injuries in the first match of the World Cup. Karim Benzema was the latest big star to be left out of the squad for France. The absence of Benzema, fresh from becoming a Ballon d’Or winner, will be a big blow for them. They are also without Christopher Nkunku and Presnel Kimpembe, while Raphael Varane’s fitness status is not entirely clear. Furthermore, they progressed to the tournament without their main midfielders in Paul Pogba and N’Golo Kante. Meanwhile, Australia are sweating over the fitness status of forward Martin Boyle. It is unlikely that he will play any role on Tuesday.
