Germany will be keen to shed the painful memories of the 2018 World Cup when they open their campaign against Asian powerhouse Japan in Qatar. European giants went into Russia 2018 as the defending champions but surprisingly failed to make it out of the group stage. Four years later, Germany – under a new head coach – will be keen to cement their place among the elite at the ongoing World Cup. However, they won’t have an easy task on Wednesday as they come up against a tough Japanese side.

Not only in the 2018 World Cup, but Germany also had a poor performance at Euro 2020 last year when they were ousted at the round-of-16 stage. Under new head coach Hansi Flick, they would be keen to go deeper into the competition but form has not been in their favor. In the Nations League, they could only manage seven points from six matches to finish third in League A Group 3. On the other hand, Japan is also not in the best of form. They are winless in their last two matches, including a 2-1 loss to Canada in a friendly last week. Japan were eliminated at the last-16 stage in Russia 2018.

Barring a few blunders here and there, both the sides have more or less their complete squads for their World Cup opener. It is not clear whether Leroy Sane can feature in this match or not, however, Thomas Muller, Niklas Fulkrug and Antonio Rudiger have good chances to make it into the starting lineup. Meanwhile, Japan are sweating over Hidemasa Morita’s fitness status and it is unclear whether he will feature in the match. On a positive front though, they could have made available Karou Mitoma and Wataru Endo for this match. Takahiro Tomiyasu should also be fit to start for Japan on Wednesday.
