Howard, Beasley called up to US team for September games

Chicago —

Goalkeeper Tim Howard is back with the US national team.

The US Soccer Federation announced on Thursday that coach Jurgen Klinsmann had called up Howard and veteran defender Damarcus Beasley for next month’s exhibitions against Peru and Brazil.

Klinsmann said that for now, Howard is the No. 2 goalkeeper behind Brad Guzan, who took a year off from the national team for family reasons following his stellar 2014 World Cup performance. Howard said last month he was ready to return.

Beasley is a four-time World Cup veteran, who retired from the international game last December. But the defender returned to the team for the Gold Cup this summer, and after the tournament he and Klinsmann admitted he could continue playing for the US.

The Americans meet Peru on Sept. 4 in Washington, then host Brazil four days later in Foxboro, Massachusetts. On 10 October, they would face Mexico at the Rose Bowl in a playoff to determine CONCACAF’s representative at the 2017 Confederations Cup.
