Morocco will kick off its preparations for the upcoming FIFA World Cup in Qatar with a friendly match against Georgia at the Sharjah Stadium on Thursday. The Atlas Lions will begin their campaign against last edition’s finalists Croatia on 23 November before taking on Belgium and Canada in their next Group F matches on 27 November and 2 December respectively. The two nations were first in action in September, with Morocco playing out a goalless draw against Paraguay in a friendly, while Gibraltar beat Georgia 2–1 in a Nations League match.

Morocco qualified for the World Cup in March after beating the Democratic Republic of the Congo 5–2 on aggregate in the third round of the qualifiers. Since then, the Atlas Lions have lost only one of their five matches in all competitions. Before a goalless draw against Paraguay, Walid Regargui’s men beat Chile 2–0 with second-half goals from Sofiane Boufal and Abdelhamid Samiri. Meanwhile, the Atlas Lions are heading to Qatar looking to better their performance in Russia four years ago, when they finished bottom of Group B.
On the other hand, Georgia failed to qualify for their first World Cup after finishing fourth in Group B of the UEFA qualifiers. However, Willy Sagnol’s team turned their fortunes around with an impressive run in the UEFA Nations League, registering five wins from six matches to top League C Group 4. Last 11 matches in all competitions. The Crusaders have kept eight clean sheets and conceded just four goals since their last defeat, which was against Greece (2-0) in October 2021.

Regargui is expected to select a strong starting eleven, with the likes of Achraf Hakimi, Romain Saiss, Nayef Egurd and Yahia Attiyat Allah starting at the defensive end of the pitch. Youssef An-Nesri is likely to lead the attack in support of Ziyek and Abukhal. For Georgia, Napoli-man Khvicha Kvartskhelia has been sidelined with injury. Chakvetadze, Quilitia and Lobzhanidze could form the front-three.
