Pele urges Blatter, FIFA to set the record straight

Pele has urged Sepp Blatter to give an honest account of his time in charge of FIFA as world football’s governing body grapples with a corruption crisis.

Blatter was re-elected as FIFA president in May after nine former and current officials were convicted of fraud conspiracy and corruption as part of an investigation by US and Swiss authorities.

The 79-year-old later announced his resignation and that he would leave his post at the end of the year, although last week the suspension of FIFA Secretary-General Jerome Valcke, following a formal investigation into allegations linking him to a scheme intended to sell 2014 World Cup tickets Is suspended. For inflated prices, an intense crisis period ensued.

Pele, a Brazilian football icon, is a member of FIFA’s football committee, which has not met for years, and the many negative stories surrounding the global game have troubled the three-time World Cup winner.

Pele told Sky Sports: “I was invited to help FIFA with Franz Beckenbauer and we worked together for two or three years, so when you see what has happened it is very sad “

“I don’t know exactly what happened, you hear but you don’t know, but after what happened in the last two years, he [Blatter] deserves to be honest and tell the truth about what he has seen.”

Former Brazilian football federation chief Jose Maria Marin was among the FIFA officials detained in Zurich earlier this year, and Pele has asked his home nation to settle the matter.

“It all happened after the last World Cup, when all Brazilians were very sad [about the national team’s defeat]And then in this situation you have our representative at FIFA,” he said. “So we have to forget the last World Cup and cleanup.”
