Ecuador, on the other hand, played in an attacking 4–3–3 formation, with Estupinen, Hincapie, Torres and Preciado playing in the backline. In the center of the pitch were Caicedo, Mendez and Plata. Romário Ibarra, Valencia and Estrada were the front three.

Qatar started with promise, but the attack didn’t pose any major threat as Ecuador handled it calmly. Ecuador broke through early and pressured the Qatari defence, which resulted in mistakes. Valencia took advantage of this to put Ecuador 1–0 up, only for it to be ruled a tight offside. Plata then took control and whipped one inside, only to clear the defender.

Mendez played through Valencia, and yet another mistake was made, and Ecuador were awarded a penalty. Valencia held their composure to put Ecuador up 1–0 and score their first goal of the tournament. Caeido then breaks through Qatar’s midfield and feeds Preciado down the right flank. He then sent a ball into the box, where Valencia made it 0–2 for Ecuador.

Qatar showed flashes of quality football as Hatem peached a delivery to Afif, only for him to smash one over the bar from 25 yards. Muntari got hold of the ball after an Ecuadorian defender failed to clear it and fired a shot over the crossbar. All the damage was done in the first half when Qatar were caught off guard, and Ecuador took all three points in their first game of the FIFA World Cup and topped Group A.
