Senegal and Netherlands will face off in Group A of the 2022 FIFA World Cup at the Al Thumama Stadium on Monday evening. Both sides head into the match on the back of some impressive form, as the Dutch have won each of their last three matches, while Senegal have not conceded a goal in six of their last eight. Senegal narrowly missed out on the knockout stage of the 2018 edition of the tournament, as the fair play point tiebreaker was the deciding factor. On the other hand, the Oranje reached the semi-finals of the tournament in Brazil eight years ago, but failed to qualify for the final in the previous term.

The Teranga Lions will be looking to keep things tight at the back against the Dutch before moving on to more winnable fixtures against Qatar and Ecuador. Courtesy of their solid defensive play, Senegal have dominated the African continent since 2018. This is partly due to the fact that they have one of the best defenders in world football, Kalidou Coulibaly, FIFA Best Goalkeeper Award winner Edouard Mendy and a solid defensive midfielder line-up of Pep Gueye, Pape Sarr and Nampalis Mendy. In the absence of charismatic striker Sadio Mane, head coach Aliu Cisse is likely to opt for a 4-2-3-1 formation, with Boule Dia leading the line. Guay and N. Mendy’s midfield pairing has the ability to restrict choice. The pairing of De Jong Klaassen and Koopmeiners could be the deciding factor in the game.
The Netherlands, on the other hand, are in excellent form, unbeaten in their last 17 matches, winning 12 of them. Louis van Gaal is likely to opt for a 3-4-1-2 formation with Frankie de Jong in midfield. In the absence of Memphis Depay, who is nursing a hamstring injury, Klaasen is likely to be deployed in a free role behind two strikers Bergwijn and Cody Gakpo. Right-wing-back Denzel Dumfries is a doubt for Monday’s game after being sent off in Inter Milan’s Serie A match last week. Hence, Jeremy Frimpong is expected to occupy the right flank. Frankie de Dong is going to be the key man in midfield and his ability to supply quality balls to the wingers could be key to the Netherlands’ success. ,
Possible formation and lineup
Sadio Mane is the most notable absentee in the Senegalese side. The Bayern Munich forward suffered a fibula injury during a Bundesliga game against Werder Bremen earlier this month and has been ruled out of the World Cup. The former Liverpoo-man’s absence was a huge blow for the African champions. The Monaco player is therefore likely to start on the left wing, with Dia playing down the center and Sarr on the right flank. Gueye and N’Mendy could sit in front of the back-four. As for the Netherlands, Liverpool’s Virgil van Dijk could marshal Nathan Ake and Jurien Timbers into the back-three. Ajax full-back Danny Dallind is expected to occupy the left-flank.
