Senegal faced the Netherlands in a Group A match at the Al Thumama Stadium in Doha, Qatar. Even without Sadio Mane, Senegal looked solid on paper as they went with a 4-3-3 defense of Sabli, Koulibaly, Cisse and Diallo. Couette, Gueye and Pape were in midfield, while Dutta, Dia and Sarr played up front.
Assisted by Louis van Gaal, the Netherlands moved in a 3–4–1–2 formation, with Knoppert as their goalkeeper. Ake, Van Dijk and De Ligt all operated in a back three. In the middle played Blind, de Jong, Burghuis and Dumfries, with Gakpo ahead of them. The front two slots were occupied with Janssen and Bergwijn.

Gakpo, Klaasen beat strong Senegalese defense in second half
The Dutch player of the year was flying down the ground when he found Blind, who fired wide of Mendy. Bregwijn freed Burghuis, who fed De Jong only to be ejected by the Dutch. Janssen then passed one to Burghus, who hit it over the bar. Senegal looked strong in defense as they needed some magic to break down the backline.
De Jong fired a through ball into the box, and Gapko headed past Mendy to give the Dutch a 1–0 lead in the second half. The Netherlands sealed the game with a 2–0 lead thanks to Davy Klaasen, who headed the ball into an empty net after Memphis Depay’s shot had been blocked by Mendy.
