Both the countries have not qualified for the upcoming World Cup to be held in Qatar after losing in the playoffs. Sweden were beaten 2–0 by Poland, while the visitors lost against Cameroon on away goals, with the match ending 2–2 on aggregate.

Sweden got the better of Mexico in midweek as Markus Rohden and Mattias Swanberg scored either side of Alexis Vega’s equaliser. The result ended the Blue and Yellow’s five game winless run. The Scandinavian nation did not have a great Nations League campaign as they were relegated to League C after finishing bottom of League B Group 4. Sweden’s last competitive game was in September which ended in a 1–1 draw against Slovenia. The Nordic nation will now turn its attention to Euro 2024 qualifying, which begins in March. Sweden is drawn in Group F alongside Estonia, Belgium, Azerbaijan and Austria.
On the other hand, Algeria are undefeated since losing 2-1 to Cameroon in the second leg of the third round of World Cup qualifying in March. Meanwhile, the Desert Warriors were forced to settle for a draw against Mali on Wednesday. Riyad Mahrez scored a penalty on the stroke of half-time, before Massadio Hadera replied for Mali at the 58th-minute mark, ending Algeria’s five-game winning streak. After the friendly match against the European Union, Jamel Belmadi’s team will turn their attention to the African Nations Championship in January.
