Switzerland and Cameroon will play each other for the first time in a Group G fixture of the 2022 FIFA World Cup at the Al Janab Stadium on Thursday. The Swiss made it to the final of the tournament courtesy of finishing top of Group C, ahead of European champions Italy in the UEFA qualifiers, while the African team got the better of Algeria in the third round playoff. Meanwhile, both countries were involved in warm-up friendlies last week, with the Red Cross losing 2-0 to Ghana, while Cameroon played out a 1-1 draw against Panama. The Indomitable Lions return to the global stage after missing out on qualification four years ago. Meanwhile, Switzerland reached the last-16 stage in Russia before losing 1–0 to Sweden.

Switzerland had an impressive World Cup qualifying campaign, finishing unbeaten on 18 points out of a possible 24, two points ahead of second-placed Italy. Before the loss to Ghana, the national team recorded consecutive wins in Nations League games against the likes of Portugal, Spain and the Czech Republic. Three wins helped Murat Yakin’s team secure third place in League A Group 2 and retain their place in the top tier of European football.
Cameroon, on the other hand, are winless in their last four matches, losing two of them. Rigobert Song’s side qualified for the final in dramatic fashion as they beat a formidable Algerian side on away goals after the two-legged tie ended 2–2. The Indomitable Lions have qualified for eight World Cup finals and their best performance came in 1990, when they reached the quarter-finals before losing 3–2 to England.

Borussia Monchengladbach goalkeeper Yann Sommer is likely to be a key figure for Switzerland as the 33-year-old is known for his stellar performances in major tournaments. Arsenal-man Granit Xhaka, who has 109 international caps to his name, should partner Frehler in the engine room. Embolo could lead the line in support of Shaqiri, Vargas and So. For Cameroon, Bayern Munich’s Eric Maxime could bring Choupou-Moting Aboubakar up front, while Napoli-man Andre-Franck Zambo Enguisa is pulling the strings in midfield.
