On Monday evening in Group B, the United States and Wales begin their journey at the FIFA World Cup in Qatar. The international stage, and the World Cup in particular, is currently the center of attention and emphasis of the football world. Wales and the USA were both absent from the last tournament in Russia, but they are both back with strong teams this time around and have a good chance of pulling off some significant surprises. Here are some of the key battles to watch in the game.
Christian Pulisic vs Ben Davis
Although midfielder Tyler Adams has been named captain of the USA National Team, Christian Pulisic remains undoubtedly the most influential player in the team. The young pace winger has been on the global scene for quite some time now and carries a lot of hopes for his country on his shoulders. The United States will rely on their attacking power, of which Pulisic is a vital part.
Tottenham Hotspur defender, Ben Davies will be the leader of the Welsh defence. Davis is an experienced campaigner and his experience will come in handy for the national team. Although capable of playing as a left back, Davies is expected to play as a center back in a three in back setup for Wales. His fight against Pulisic should be a treat for the viewers to watch.
Sergino Dest vs Gareth Bale
Sergino Daest is easily the most recognizable name on the US defensive line. The right back was recently declared fit to participate in the World Cup, giving the Americans a huge boost. He will be accompanied on defense by more experienced players like Walker Zimmerman and Aaron Long. However, Dest’s ability to move forward and become a threat during transitions makes him one to keep an eye on.
Gareth Bale and Wales are two names synonymous with each other. Over the years, the winger has been close to World Cup places only to suffer disappointments. However, Bell finally gets his chance to take part on the biggest stage. Although his best days are behind him, no one can doubt the Welshman’s ability when he is motivated and in the right spirit for his country.
Weston McKennie vs Aaron Ramsey
Like Dest, Weston McKennie was also recently declared fit to participate in the World Cup. McKennie would provide a breather to the US midfield. He has been a key part of the Juventus midfield since joining them in 2020. Undoubtedly, he will be a key member for the USA in the most important area of the pitch.
Aaron Ramsey is heading towards the twilight of his extraordinary career. Playing for OGC Nice in Ligue 1, Ramsey hasn’t enjoyed the best of the season, scoring just one goal so far. However, his importance to the Welsh midfield cannot be doubted where he will provide the necessary experience to guide the team.
