The United States men’s national team is back at the FIFA World Cup for the first time in eight years, and hopes will be high for the country’s richest crop of young talent ever. But what exactly does a successful tournament look like for Greg Berhalter’s team?
That’s the question we asked our World Cup analysts at Fox Sports. Here’s what he said.
What does success look like for the USMNT? How far do you predict they will go in the tournament?
stew holden, Quarterfinals and Round of 16.
Landon Donovan: Getting out of the group is still the measure of success for us and I am sure we will get out of the group.
[Meet every team in Group B alongside the USMNT]
carli lloyd, If the USMNT can win their first game against Wales, it will be the deciding factor if they make it out of their group. They need a win to start the tournament in order to gain confidence to face England next. I think it is possible for them to get out of their group and reach the last 16.
Eli Wagner, I think the success is getting to the last 16, and I think that’s what they get. Considering that the Netherlands is first in their group, it is possible that they can overtake the Netherlands, but it is a really big challenge, so I think the round of 16 is too far away.
Chad Ochocinco: Success to me is the USMNT making it out of their group. They have a competitive group, but I think USA will duke it out.
Alexi Lalas talks about expectations for the USMNT
Fox Sports Soccer analyst Alexi Lalas joins Craig Carton to preview the 2022 FIFA World Cup. Lalas previews USA vs Wales and what we can expect from the young US men’s team.
Doug McIntyre, After four years of not qualifying, at least – exiting the group – would be considered successful. I’m not sure even the most optimistic American fan expected the US to top a quartet that includes England (though the USMNT did exactly that in 2010) and they are a distinct underdog in a possible round of 16 matchup with the Netherlands. Will be For an American team that hasn’t won a knockout game in 20 years, defeating anyone in the second round would not only be a success, but a victory.
martin rogers, As usual – exiting the group. A Round of 16, or better, would set things up nicely for 2026.
Kelly Smith: With a young but talented squad, the USMNT is building and the next World Cup is where they will likely find real success. Group B is tough, but they should have the knack to get out of it; Anything after round of 16 can be considered a real success.
Maurice Edu, I am optimistic and excited about this group and I think a quarterfinal finish is possible. It starts with being eliminated from the group and the confidence that comes from that will give this team the belief that they can beat anyone.
Eniola Aluko: The breakthrough for the USMNT is the quarterfinals. England, Wales and Iran are a tough group and I think the US will need to get a good result against Wales to have any chance of getting out of the group. If they do that and make it to the quarterfinals, it’s a big achievement in my opinion.
Warren Barton: I think for them, it should be at least in the last 16. It’s potentially a tough group, but I think if they play it right, they’re capable of beating everyone except England! I think he has the potential to do very well.
